The second edition of Dr. Hendrickson’s book, Massage and Manual Therapy for Orthopedic Conditions was released in September, 2009. It is published in five languages and has become a required textbook for many advanced massage and manual therapy courses taught throughout the United States. Dr. Hendrickson is currently working on the third edition, which he anticipates will be released in the Spring of 2024.

Massage and Manual Therapy for Orthopedic Conditions succinctly and clearly describes the anatomy, kinesiology, function, dysfunction and injury of each region of the body. The book gives detailed instructions on how to perform Hendrickson Method for the treatment of both acute injury and chronic pain, as well as how to optimize musculoskeletal function. Hendrickson Method has been refined over forty years of clinical practice and produces consistently effective results. For more information on Hendrickson Method, click here.

One of the significant contributions of Hendrickson Method, detailed in this book, is the introduction of a revolutionary new method of soft tissue mobilization called wave mobilization®. Based on the internal energy healing of Tai Chi, these strokes are performed in gentle, rhythmic oscillations that mimic ocean waves and penetrate deep within the body, reducing or eliminating pain, dissolving adhesions, lengthening connective tissue, eliminating trigger points, improving range of motion in the joints, rehabilitating cartilage and discs, and helping to restore normal neurological function.

Other highlights of the book include:

  • A step-by-step approach to assessment and treatment to address every body region

  • Reference tables that detail muscle groups, insertions, actions and dysfunctions

  • Details on contraindications and guidelines for referrals to other health professionals

  • Instructions on ergonomic positioning for the therapist to work more effectively and effortlessly

  • Case studies

  • Review questions at the end of each section

  • References for further study
